What to expect
As you would expect, working with individuals is as varied as well, each individual! In a recent podcast with MyGain by AATIS, our Ballina-based trainer Sue Ashton walks us through what this field entails and what you can expect from a day’s work in aged care.
Why so many people are jumping on board
The community services industry (particularly aged care) is expanding at a pace that we’re struggling to keep up with. It’s been predicted that the aged care industry looks set to double by the year 2050, and the Australian government predicts there will be about 179,000 job openings in the next five years – in what is already a vast sector (training.com.au).
Essentially, as our South East Queensland trainer, Stephanie Van Der Weil put’s it “there is never going to be enough people. There will always be more demand”. The sector is a desperate need of more skilled and passionate carers to step up and give our senior citizens the dignity they deserve and help improve their quality of life.

Who is this for?
There is no “typical” type of person for this kind of work or study. While often the industry attracts female workers, we are pleased to see many males seeking opportunities also. Students in our classes range from school leavers, mums returning to work after having children, retired people that have decided to come back to the workforce, and everyone in between.
Some key skills and attributes that employers look out for are; a supporting and kind nature, great communications skills, patience and discretion, an empowering and positive attitude, and physical fitness. A clean criminal record is also usually essential.
What to do to get started …and how can we help!
Getting started is easy. To break-into this world you will need a Certificate III in Individual Support (or higher) to give you a comprehensive overview of the industry, as well as equip you with knowledge around safety, legal and ethical considerations when working with someone elderly, or someone with a disability. This is usually completed part-time (often 1 or 2 days in class per week) so you can continue to work while you gain the qualification. Learning is a mix of theory, practical, assignments, group work and will finish with mandatory work experience with a local facility (which often leads to a job!). Classes are limited in size and your trainer will be very experienced and ready to support you throughout the entire journey. We also offer Certificate IV in Ageing Support, Disability and Leisure and Heath, plus a Diploma of Community Services for those further along in their career. Another popular pathway into the aged care industry is to complete a traineeship at an aged care facility. This allows you to gain practical experience in the industry, learning from senior staff members and working directly with clients. This is a popular option for those who already have a job in the industry.
