Pre-Apprenticeships – What You Need to Know

If you are looking to begin a career in a trade-based industry, but are not certain about committing to an apprenticeship, a pre-apprenticeship is a great way to ‘try before you buy’.

A pre-apprenticeship includes work experience and vocational training in a variety of trade qualifications. Undertaking a pre-apprenticeship equips students with skills and knowledge to start an apprenticeship. Applicants who have completed a pre-apprenticeship/traineeship course are often favoured by future employers

Most employers look for candidates that are ‘job ready’. Candidates that have some knowledge of the industry, tools and what to expect are much more employable.

Under a pre-apprenticeship or pre-traineeship, you’ll undertake an introductory unit allowing you to get a taste of the trade or industry. These introductory courses are fee-free meaning you won’t have to pay anything. If you decide it’s for you, then you are already on your way to studying for your full qualification.

Pre-apprenticeships and pre-traineeships may be fee-free!

To be eligible for a pre-apprenticeship/traineeship in NSW, you just need to:

  • be aged 15 – 25 years
  • have completed year 10 (or its equivalent) and be eligible to leave school under NSW Education Amendment (school leaving age) Regulation 2009
  • be living or working in NSW
  • be an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident, Australian humanitarian visa holder or New Zealand citizen.
